A Guide to Domain Names

So, you’re ready to embark on the thrilling quest of securing your very own slice of digital real estate – a domain name. There is quite a journey ahead, but this guide will take you through the arcane lands of domains, unravelling their mysteries with a dash of humour and a sprinkle of wit.

What in the World is a Domain Name?

So, you’ve decided to stake your claim in cyberspace, but what exactly is this mystical entity called a domain name? Think of it as the address of your digital abode. Just like your physical address, your digital one tells everyone where to find you.

It’s what people type into their browsers to find you. Like wizards casting spells, we mere mortals can conjure a unique name for our digital sanctuary.

But… What The Heck is a TLD?

Now, you might have stumbled upon the cryptic term “TLD.” Don’t get bogged down in the jargon, TLD stands for Top-Level Domain.

It’s simply the “.com,” “.org,” or “.net” that adds a touch of flair to your digital identity. Choosing the right TLD is akin to selecting the perfect wand – it defines your wizardry in the vast realm of the internet.

How to Register a Domain

You will need to find a registrar, who almost always sells hosting as well. Choosing where to register your domain is not as important as choosing where to host your site, but if you can do it all in one place it will save you some time and some headaches down the road.

If you do have your domain purchased through somewhere other than where you host your site, don’t worry. Domain registration only last for 1 year. So you can move your domain registration after 12 months if you wish.

To register a domain, i highly recommend any of the below:

  • Blacknight
  • Kinsta
  • Sitegound

The Gold Coins: What to Expect in the Price Bazaar

Prices vary between under €10 to around €50 for the most expensive.

Keep your wits about you and always compare the price for the first year to the renewal price. Sometimes the first year can be free, but after that, it could shoot up to 50 per year.

Naming and SEO: Choosing Wisely

Choosing your name is highly individual, it can be pretty much anything you want however there is some simply tips and tricks to keep in mind:

  • Make it memorable – people are more likely to visit the site if they can remember the address off the top of their head.
  • Don’t include numbers or dashes – addresses with these in them tend to be viewed as spam by users and Google. So, instead of janes-hotel.com go with janeshotel.com, and instead of number1coffee.com, go with numberonecoffee.com.
  • Keep it short and sweet – this is similar to the first point, but the shorter it is, the more likely someone is to remember it or type it in.

Remember, your domain name is not just an address; it’s the banner under which you march into the digital battlefield. Choose wisely, register bravely, and enjoy the journey.
